It’s unbelievable I have ran Weights & Bias for more than 400 times in my research paper. And there are also many local runs haven’t been counted in this. Group work is easier and more efficient, but I think independent research can train a person and get a whole picture of the research procedures.

It has been a week. And it’s really a great exp to serve as a guider in this program. For me it’s a great chance to review what I have done on the recent research, and recap what need to do when doing research. And also a great chance to practice oral English for me.

It seems that 200GB storage aren’t enough for a terrible query plan. If we use too many Hash Joins in a complicated SQL(like those in Join Order Benchmark), there will be a spike in the disk usage and if it exceeds the ceiling, well then the process will crash :(

Today I’m taking a look at LanceDB, and when I glance through the source code of its underlying storage Lance, it’s surprised to find that RoaringBitmap has been used in its internal. The feeling of one thing you have worked before stikes you back really amazing. Like meet again with an old friend unexpectedly.

It seems that using instance t2.micro (since it’s a free tier) will easily crash using Multithreaded Compilation like command ‘sudo make -j’. The SSH connection will crash both from the AWS terminal or VS code SSH connection.

OK, so today will be the first day I post something here. During the struggle of few months, I’m finally able to get my AWS account and set up an EC2 with GPU, rather than using Cloud Lab, CARC, IMSC cluster provided by Info Lab, .etc. It’s a relief to use a bare machine running Database + GPU rather than in a Docker Container, which I always bumped into seg faults, GPU resource dry, and corrupted docker file systems.

Today marks the beginning of 2025. Reflecting on 2024, it was a year filled with challenges for me. Whether in scientific research, emotional life, economic pressures, or interpersonal relationships and self-regulation, I faced numerous difficulties that often left me feeling exhausted. At times, I lamented the lack of recognition and support, despite my significant efforts which seemed to yield limited results. However, I take solace in the fact that these experiences have made me stronger and more resilient. While I may keep my vulnerabilities hidden, my outer resolve has grown increasingly robust. Regardless of the outcome, I will approach the uncertain future calmly, striving to be more knowledgeable and resilient each day.

Thanks for all the professors and students who helped and guided me these years, the DB rersearch is too hard compared to AI. But I think I’m gradually used to it! And willing to contribute to this area in my future PhD life.

I once thought “M3” only referred to Apple’s chip series, or a kind of beef quality, never imagining it was also a type of leukemia. I used part of my living expenses to help cover the exorbitant cost of my boyfriend’s treatment, but as the bills piled up and his condition showed no improvement, I felt utterly helpless. At times I found myself on the rooftop, silently crying as the sun set over Los Angeles and sank into the horizon. To save money, I limited myself to one formal meal a day at the campus dining hall, and the weight I lost was a visible testament to the strain. Most of my monthly TA salary was sent back to him, each time the US Dollar was appreciated, it brought a small but meaningful sense of relief, helping to alleviate the financial strain. How long haven’t I go out for fun? I just couldn’t remember, even someone can say they don’t care about money, but when the situation is really bad, money is just like your god, even the least holy type. I came to fully grasp the harshness and weight of reality, understanding for the first time the true meaning of “scraping together every silver coin.” Like a Chinese song 《半生已过》(Half of My Life has past)by 张良 (Liang Zhang),”都说碎银解千愁,奈何碎银最难求。如若故里可安生,谁愿异乡寒水流。”
